Another Way

I just watched a great video called “The Story of Stuff“. 10 minutes. Thoughtful. Worth watching, especially before you go out holiday shopping this year.

After you watch, click through to the punchline for what you can do differently. Great call to action.

  1. Interesting. However, her message is clouded with too much hyperbole and partisan political messaging so it’s hard to figure out how much of what she is saying is true and how much she’s exaggerating.

Ultimately, I get a “I’m better than you cuz I don’t buy new computer monitors and cheap radio’s” vibe off her. I didn’t see her present anything about things like RoHS and other standards of safe disposal. And I wonder what the buttons on her shirt are made of? Hopefully not metal or plastic…

  2. It’s hard to talk about consumption without being at least a little hypocritical. Especially if your medium is a streaming media animation. ;-) So it could have been clearer, yes, and less “preaching to the choir”. But the message is nevertheless an important one, and I think the treatment of it — despite the one-sidedness– will appeal to a fairly broad base of people. And that’s good.

I do wish though that the video talked more about solutions, in addition to the problems. I’m tired of people pushing the fear button as the main motivator for change.

  3. I liked how the animations illustrate the speech.
As for solutions – the Simplicite Volontaire (Simple living?) can reduce that consumption arrow.
