I’ve recently started using the FeedBurner service, which promises to give me a better handle on statistics, reduce the load on my web server, and help me to send out email digests for free. If you don’t like FeedBurner you can get my raw RSS feeds here instead: blog entries and comments.

Help! I’m new to RSS. How do I get started?
You can get a list of blog updates delivered to you automatically within a tool called an “RSS reader”. It’s a lot like receiving email… the updates come to you, rather than you having to remember to visit the web site.

Here’s how to do it:

First, select an RSS reader, if you don’t already have one. This is free and takes about 5 minutes. Here are some options:

  1. I use Bloglines, which is a very popular web-based service.
  2. Google, Yahoo! and MSN all offer RSS-ready personalized homepages. With this approach your personalized news feeds show up on your home page. You can find these services at Google (click on “Personalized Home”), Windows Live, and Yahoo! (click on “My Yahoo!”).
  3. The Firefox web browser and Internet Explorer 7.0 beta 2 browser both have built-in support for RSS.
  4. There are also PC-based dedicated RSS reader applications. See a long list of PC-based readers here.

I prefer web-based readers (e.g. options 1 and 2 above) because they allow you to track your RSS feeds from any computer, just like Hotmail, Yahoo! mail or Gmail do for email. This makes it easy to read news from both home and work, for instance, or when you’re on the road.

Once you have your RSS reader set up, just click the relevant button at the top of this page to subscribe to my RSS feed.
